Taxi, shuttle or private transfer in Punta Cana: what to choose

Three quite different transport models coexist at the exit of PUJ. Choosing between them changes the price less than people assume, and changes the first couple of hours of the trip a great deal.

The shared shuttle

It is the cheapest option per head and comes bundled with some packages. The trade-off is time: the vehicle waits until it fills, then works its way from hotel to hotel. A twenty-five-minute run can turn into an hour and a half if your hotel is the last stop, and there is no way to know in advance.

The kerbside taxi

It leaves immediately and needs no booking. In exchange, the price is agreed on the spot, with no published tariff, after a long flight and with your bags at your feet. Nor do you know which vehicle you are getting until you see it — which matters if you are travelling with large cases or need a child seat.

The private transfer

You book it before flying, at a fixed price and with a chosen vehicle. The chauffeur waits in arrivals with your name, tracks the flight if it slips, and drives straight to your hotel. It is what we do, so read this with that caveat in front of it — but the real difference is not luxury, it is that nothing is left to decide when you land.

The honest comparison

• Price per head: the shuttle wins with one or two people and draws level from three or four.
• Time: private and taxi go direct; the shuttle does not.
• Luggage: only the private transfer guarantees the vehicle takes your cases.
• Delayed flights: only the private transfer tracks the flight.
• Child seats: not guaranteed in a taxi or a shuttle.

Is there Uber in Punta Cana?

Ride-hailing apps work patchily in the hotel zone and do not operate normally at the airport exit. They are not something to count on for arrival.

Is the hotel's own transfer cheaper?

Sometimes, especially if it is bundled into the package. Check whether it is shared and how many stops it makes before yours.

How much has to be paid up front?
